Overthinking happens to us all and we can get caught up in an overthinking loop before we know it.
Our day can spiral out of control as a consequence: energy flows where attention goes.
It is almost like unpleasant daydreaming.
So what can we do?
Step 1: pay attention to our thoughts and try and name them when we are over thinking. This will get easier with time.
Step 2: practice “breaking state” stopping the over thinking loop.
Here are some ways to do this ….
1. Meditation – remember you cannot breathe into your past or future, just in the present.
2. Journaling – write the thoughts down but perhaps time limit this. This can help identify patterns/ topics and may help with solutions.
3. Exercise – movement is medicine here. This does not need to be a marathon! Exercise really does slow down your thoughts
4. Listen to music and sing! Heck even sing and dance (which would count as exercise). This will really draw your attention away from the loop.
5. Have a list of easy things to do.
6. Good sleep but this can be difficult if you are distressed by your overthinking! Steps 1-5 will help here.
Good luck and Love You!
