Love You: Love Living

Low maintenance well-being.

British Society of Lifestyle Medicine 6 Pillars of Well-being

I have always said that well-being is an active and not a passive process. It is not just going to happen. I believe this to be true.

My oldest mantra for well-being

I am also aware that there are lots of celebrities who post and are very critical of being concerned about health and well-being. I get this ……but! Let’s not forget that these celebrities are privileged. They may not always have been but they have become privileged. They have access to good food, lovely homes, stylists and personal trainers. It’s very easy to tell people to not concern themselves so much from a glittering height. However, I believe that what the majority are really saying is don’t worry about appearance vs health. This I can agree with. I have written before about the confusion of appearance and health – which can translate into goals and health kicks that are short lived and extreme. We stop once we reach the weight to get into the dress for the wedding or holiday.

Since I was a little girl, I have always been interested in health and well-being. I know this is unusual and I am realising I need to recognise that not everyone is the same. People don’t want to spend every waking moment thinking about wellness and this is right! So how can I help bridge the gap with the active process and maintenance?

  1. Be aware! But not obsess. Know the 6 pillars of well-being as described by BSLM. These need tending. Gentle pruning.
  2. Remember that well-being is a lifelong endeavour (hopefully) and there will be bumps in the road (this is called living). Things will not go to plan all of the time. When this happens check in with step one!
  3. Know your magic formula- what keeps you in check. What are your routines that work for you within the 6 pillars. But, remember point no 2 is the only 100% guaranteed part of well-being. The rest is up to you.
  4. Challenge your inner narrative- stop being all or nothing with well-being goals. Be more fluid.
  5. Recognise what you are doing well today! Focus your internal narrative to a positive one. Energy flows where attention goes – watch where you send your energy.

Life is to be lived, enjoyed and experienced- the highs and the lows. Combine living with all its roller coaster of ups and downs, with a quiet cultivation of self care and wellness. The 6 pillars of well-being allows you to feel balanced in regards to your life and view things as not all bad and yet room for personal growth.
